Ole Miss’ Frozen Success
February 15, 2012

Currently, the Ole Miss athletic department is in a state of peril. The football team has not won a conference game in two straight seasons and has seen head coach, and SEC mainstay, Houston Nutt fired.

The basketball team has not been to the NCAA tournament since 2002 and the Rebel baseball team that has been considered a national powerhouse have yet to make it to Omaha, NE for the college world series since 1972.

However, with the hard work of two students, Cody Johnson and Colin Knight, there lies a shining glimmer of hope, comparable to the reflection that their blades make on the ice they skate on, for the future of the Rebel’s athletic successes in a sport that is only just beginning to be known throughout the South.

Cody and Colin in three short years have taken a dream and turned it in to a reality. When they arrived on Ole Miss’ illustrious campus there was no hockey team. But with their tireless work ethic and determination they built a program from scratch in the Spring of 2009. Now, 3 years later they have a team from the University of Mississippi competing at a national level in the American College Hockey Association’s (ACHA) Tier III regional tournament on February 17th in Irmo, South Carolina.

The Rebel hockey team took the ice in their inaugural season during the 2009-2010 year, and while competitive with a small roster, only managed a 4-14 record. Cody and Colin hit the recruiting trail hard in the off-season sending letters to high school hockey programs all across the nation. Their hope was that skilled players who wanted to receive a quality education would fall in love with what the University of Mississippi had to offer academically and aesthetically, and hockey would come secondary.

This method paid off as recruits would visit the campus and partake in “The Grove” (Ole Miss’ nationally renowned tailgate prior to football games) and enjoy meeting the team, co-eds, and seeing what the university had to offer. The results paid off immediately. The Rebels improved in the 2010-2011 season to a 10-15 mark and even had world renowned Ole Miss alum and two-time Super Bowl champion and MVP Eli Manning in attendance at a home game.

The 2011-2012 season has been a season of excellence for the Ole Miss ice hockey team. They have guaranteed themselves a winning record and for the first time will partake in the ACHA’s regional tournament for a chance to make it to the national tournament. The Rebels are currently 20-7 and ranked 8th in the South Region of the ACHA. They will play Loyola at 1:45 p.m. for the chance to advance.

Cody and Colin have managed to create and build a program from scratch in a region that has little vested interest in the sport of ice hockey. They do not have a large budget or excessive funds and cannot even offer recruits a scholarship. They’ve used a grassroots method of building friendships and creating networks with high school programs across the nation in more dedicated markets. Possibly, by using methods Ole Miss’ athletics department could take tips from.

The 2011-2012 season will also be the last season for both Cody and Colin. They have both accepted careers that will take them outside of the friendly Southern city of Oxford, MS and leave the future of the program in the hands of others who are kind enough to volunteer and dedicate their time to continuing the program in the future.

The program itself has given most of the players an opportunity to continue to play the game that they love at a competitive level when some thought their hockey careers were over after high school or juniors. What they created was more than just a hockey team but an entire student run organization that continued careers, built lasting memories, and created a fan base in a small North Mississippi town known more for Faulkner, Southern Hospitality, and The Square.

Rebels ImproveTo 18-7-0
February 5, 2012
Coming into the Rebels last home series of the season, the team is playing extremely well together and is on a 5 game win streak. The Rebels have out scored their opponents 26-14 since the winter break and have won 3 games vs ranked opponents.

The Rebels began their win streak with 2 wins at #13 ranked Vanderbilt. In the first game the Rebs could not find the back of the net and fell behind early on. Late in the third period the Rebels scored the go-ahead goal and won 5-4. Cody Fullinwider was credited with the game winner and Josh Hukill recorded the win and was very solid in between the pipes.

In the second game vs Vanderbilt the Rebels played a much better game getting goals from 6 different players, including 2 from freshmen Matt Obstarcyzk. The Rebels swept Vanderbilt with a 7-2 win and Alex Kohl earned his 6th win in net.

The following weekend the Rebels hit the road again for the SEC Showcase. Friday night the team faced Tennessee in Pelham, AL. Both teams came out playing a very physical game but Tennessee could not match the speed of the Rebels who would get the 5-2 victory.

Saturday the team traveled to Duluth, GA to face off against the Georgia Bulldogs. The Rebels quickly took the lead with 2 early goals including a goal from senior Taylor Casey just 30 seconds into the game. In the second period Ole Miss blew their lead with 3 unanswered goals from Georgia. Then late in the second period the Rebels would tie it up with a goal from freshmen Zach Boyton. The Rebels came out flying in the third period as senior Cody Johnson scored what would be the game winner just two minutes into the third period. Rebels beat the Bulldogs 5-3 with Alex Kohl in net.

The #11 ranked Rebels played #7 ranked Florida in the finale of the SEC Showcase Sunday morning back in Pelham, AL. Florida came out quick and had the play in the first minutes of the game yet the Rebels battled back and headed into the second period 0-0.  Then the Rebels came out on a mission scoring three goals early on with goals from Cody Johnson, Matt Obstarczyk and Cody Fullinwider. The Gators answered back with three goals of their own and with less than two minutes in the second period Cody Johnson netted the game winner as both teams battled through a scoreless third period. Freshmen goalie Josh Hukill was credited with the win.

The Rebels would like to thank senior Colin Knight who played his last game as a Rebel against Florida prior to taking a job with the Cleveland Indians organization. Colin was one of only three remaining inaugural members and has been a key piece to the organizations success since it was founded in 2009. Thank you again Colin for everything you have done for Ole Miss hockey and good luck with your future endeavors. Hotty Toddy!

Rebs fall to ranked Tide in OT
Feb 1, 2011
At the start of the season, Ole Miss set out to prove that they could compete with the SEC’s best teams. Last Saturday, they earned respect from every team in the league, especially southern regionally ranked Alabama and proving it is right track with giving anyone a run for their money.

Freshman phenom, Cameron Cook, would put the Rebels on top early in the first after scoring a pair of goals. He would light the lamp just 2:08 into the first frame with help from Cody Fullinwider and Taylor Casey. Almost fifteen minutes later he would score on Bama’s top net minder, Sean Vinson, giving the Rebs a 2-0 lead until the Tide’s Zach Dailey would score, making it a one goal game.

DIII All-Star nominee, Mark Wysock would tie the game in the second period just a little under 2:30 in to the period. Ole Miss would strike back just 3 minutes later when Jon Tietjen would find the back of the net off an assist from Lane Aldredge, putting the Rebs back on top by one.

Alabama would score twice more in the third frame, and stay on top until 1:41 left in regulation. Rebs would go on a power play thanks to Alabama’s Kory Sweatt being called for high-sticking. Cameron Cook would tie the game with help once again from Fullinwider and Collin Knight. Ole Miss’ defense would toughen up to help send the game to the team’s fourth over time frame in team history.

Alabama would take the win just forty-seven second into overtime off of Jordan Ricks’ unassisted goal.

Ole Miss moves to 8-14 overall and 8-9 in the SEC. The Rebs make a trip to the Lone Star state this weekend taking on University of Texas at Arlington Friday night and University of North Texas Saturday night. The team will have two weeks off before the SEC tournament later this month.

3rd ranked Tide squeak by Rebels
Jan 29, 2011
Ole Miss bench boss, Kristian Skou, came into last night’s game knowing that his team faced a huge challenge facing Southern Regionally ranked Alabama on their home soil, even though the game was slated as a home game for the Rebels.

The third ranked Crimson Tide would strike pay dirt first with 6:16 left in the first, as Brandon Butler would go top shelf on the Ole Miss freshman net minder Mike Houde.

The Rebels would light the lamp at 3:54 into the second period as freshman sensation Cody Fullinwider would get a breakaway goal setup by Florida native Michael Karay. Alabama would take the lead once again with 5:17 left when Christian Edge would slip one past Houde, with help from Zach Dailey and Sam Bodner.

The young Ole Miss squad would hang tough with the boys from Tuscaloosa until Butler would sneak one past the Rebel net minder. Almost four minutes later, Dailey would ice the game for Alabama with help from Sass Schirmer and Edge.

“Individual mistakes unfortunately cost us 3 goals tonight” said Skou after the game. “The good thing from tonight,” he continued. “We’re finally gelling as a team should, and have improved in the past month.”

Ole Miss moves to 8-13-0 overall and 8-9 in the SEC. The same two teams go at it again tomorrow at the Point Mallard Ice Complex, with the puck dropping at 7:30pm.

Rebels unhinge Dores, get bit by Gators
Jan 24, 2011
The Ole Miss Rebels took on two regionally ranked teams this past weekend when they played 15th ranked Vanderbilt and 13th ranked Florida, sweeping the Commodores and faltering to the 14th ranked Gators. The team lost to division 2 power Missouri in St. Louis the week before and was looking to turn things around.

In action Friday night, the Rebs jumped out to a 1-0 lead with Michael Karay finding the back of the net at 3:39 into the first period with newcomer Lane Aldridge assisting on the play. Aldredge would find pay day from a Colin Knight assist on a Rebel power play. That would be Aldredge’s first goal as a Rebel. Vandy would cut the lead to one when Kyle McCann would slip one by Rebel net minder Michael Houde. Cody Johnson and Karay would tack on two more in the third to give the Rebs a 4-1 win.

The win would be the first for the Rebs over a ranked opponent. It was also the first win as head coach for the Rebels new bench boss, Kristian Skou. Karay would finish the nigh with 3 points(2 goals, 1 assist), while Aldredge had 2 points(1 goal, 1 assist), with Johnson(1 goal) and Knight(1 assist) each earning a point.

Saturday afternoon saw a much higher scoring affair as the lamp was lit 14 times between the two teams. Taylor Casey would put the Rebels on the board first with help from Tylor Kircher and Cody Johnson with 8:13 left in the first.

The Dores would find the net two times in the second before Kircher would answer with back to back goals with help from Johnson and John Jenks. Freshman Cody Fullinwider would put the game out of reach of the boys from Music City with back to back goals of his own as the Rebs downed the Commodores 9-5. Kircher finished the afternoon with 4 points (2 goals, 2 assists), Johnson also collected 4 points (4 assists). Jenks netted 3 points (2 goals, 1 assist), while Casey (2 goals), Karay(1 goal, 1 assist), and Fullinwider(2 goals) picked up 2 points. Goalie Alex Kohl picked up 1 point (1 assist) on the afternoon.
